Dozens of local footballers have paid tribute to a talented young player 10 years after his death after being hit by a car in Greenock.
More than 30 former members of St Andrew’s Boys Club’s 2009 team laced up their boots to take part in the annual memorial match for Robbie Quigg, who was just six when he was fatally injured in a crash on Cumberland Road in October 2015.

Robbie’s clubmates, along with family, friends and supporters, helped raise £1,000 for the charity Brightest Star Foundation, which was set up following the death of another youngster, Jack Kennedy, in 2012 and now provides a range of support to grieving families following the loss of a son, daughter, sibling or grandchild.

The game itself at Ravenscraig Stadium pitted a St Andrew’s 2009 side – then known as the ‘Robbie’s Team’ – against a ‘St Andrews 2009 Select’.
With torrential rain falling for much of the afternoon, the game was described as “clean chaos in the best sense” and ended in a 7-7 draw before the Select team won the Robbie Quigg Award after a thrilling penalty shootout.

Halftime entertainment was provided by a team of dancers from the Jackson Dance and Performing Arts Studio.

A St. Andrew’s BC spokesman said: “All day there was a feeling of old teammates sinking into a familiar rhythm, as if past and present were shaking hands.

The game was held in memory of Robbie Quigg, who was only six years old when he died after being knocked down at Cumberland Road.
“Kudos to the dancers at Jackson Dance and Performing Arts Studio who braved the elements and put on a fantastic show for those in attendance.
“Most importantly, an incredible £1,000 was raised for the Brightest Star Foundation.
“A big thank you to everyone who came, played, cheered, donated and helped make this day worthy of Robbie’s name. Remembered forever.”
